Last week, my Windows server died. It has served me well for over 3 years and now the motherboard is dead, out of warranty and no longer available.
As it hosts some critical sites, services and files, I needed to replace it but didn't have either the time nor the intention of buying and building another server.
A few months ago, I set up a rather nice
Gentoo Linux server to act as a file, mail, web and database system using the following hardware
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
- 2GB DDR2-800 RAM
- Promise EX8350 PCIe RAID card
- Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Motherboard
- Thermaltake Kandalf Full Tower Case
- Thermaltake Toughpower 750W Power Supply
- 7 x Seagate 320GB SATA-II 16MB cache HDDs
Overkill for a file, mail, web and database server, but my plan was longer term than that. Next, I installed
VMWare which is a piece of software which allows you to run one or more "virtual" computers inside another.
As I only have one IP address for my house, hosting websites on both my Gentoo box and the virtual server within was a little tricky. With a little help from my mates, I managed to configure the web server on the Linux side to forward requests to my virtual Windows server for any sites hosted there.
So now, my new Windows server is running inside a virtual machine, under Gentoo Linux. I think Linux is finally starting to "click" for me.
